KPT Links Basic 1.0.0 for PowerPoint for Windows
================================================

KPT Links Basic is the free edition of KPT Links, a tool for PowerPoint made by KHBROS:
linked images, the InDesign way. It adds one tab, "KPT Links Basic", to PowerPoint:

Place Linked Choose picture files (PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG). With shapes or
pictures selected, the picture goes INTO them and keeps their size,
position, crop shape and effects; otherwise it arrives as a new frame.
Update Selected Re-read the selected linked picture(s) from their files. The frame
never moves or resizes: the new picture is drawn at the same scale as
the old one, with its top-left corner where the old one's was.
Links Every linked picture in the deck with its state: OK, modified,
                   MISSING. Click Yes to type a number and go to it. Shows only;
                   changes nothing.
Locked entries Update All, Auto Update, Relink, Embed, Edit Original, Reveal in
Finder and Export PDF (with the original pictures and vectors) are
part of KPT Links ADVANCED. Clicking one tells you what it does and
offers to open the KPT Links ADVANCED page.

Nothing is sent anywhere, there is no account, no ads, no tracking, and nothing runs on
its own.

You need: Windows 10 or 11, and the PowerPoint desktop app from Microsoft 365 or
PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021 or 2024. (It does not work in PowerPoint on the web.)

What is in this folder
----------------------

Install KPT Links Basic.cmd Double-click this one to install. Its type is
"Windows Command Script" and its icon has a gear.
Uninstall KPT Links Basic.cmd Double-click this one to remove KPT Links Basic.
  KPT_Links_Basic.ppam The add-in itself.
KPT-Links-Basic-setup.ps1 Used by "Install KPT Links Basic". You do not need
                                  to open it.
KPT-Links-Basic-remove.ps1 Used by "Uninstall KPT Links Basic". You do not need
                                  to open it.
  Read me first.txt This file.

Windows often hides the end of a file name (.cmd, .ps1, .ppam, .txt), so you may see
just "Install KPT Links Basic". That is the right one.

Install
-------

1. Before you unzip: right-click the zip file, choose Properties. If you see a
checkbox "Unblock" at the bottom, tick it and click OK. (This tells Windows you
   trust the download.)
2. Right-click the zip file and choose "Extract All...", then "Extract". The installer
does not work from inside the zip.
3. Close PowerPoint completely (save your work first).
4. In the extracted folder, double-click "Install KPT Links Basic" (the one with the
gear icon, type "Windows Command Script").
   - If Windows asks "Do you want to run this file?" or says "The publisher could not
     be verified", click "Run".
   - If Windows says "Windows protected your PC", click "More info", then "Run anyway".
   - A black window shows what was done. Press any key to close it.
5. Open PowerPoint. The "KPT Links Basic" tab is after the "View" tab.

The installer needs no administrator password. It changes only two things, for your
Windows user only:
  - it copies KPT_Links_Basic.ppam to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns
    (PowerPoint's own add-ins folder, which PowerPoint already trusts);
  - it tells PowerPoint to load that file when it starts (one registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerPoint\AddIns\KPT_Links_Basic).
It does not change any security or Trust Center setting. Running it twice is fine.

Good to know on Windows
-----------------------

  * Place Linked works with PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG.
  * WEBP and HEIC photos are tried through Windows' own picture reader. That works on
some PCs and not on others, even with the Microsoft Store extensions ("WebP Image
Extensions", "HEIF Image Extensions", "HEVC Video Extensions") installed. If one
will not place, a message says so: save a copy as PNG or JPG and place that.
  * PDF, AI (Illustrator) and PSD (Photoshop) files cannot be placed on Windows.
Save a copy as SVG, PNG or TIFF and place that.
  * A linked picture stays in the deck as an ordinary picture: if its file goes
missing, the picture is still there, and Links says MISSING.
  * Links made on a Mac point to Mac folders, so on Windows they show as MISSING (and
the other way round). The pictures themselves stay.

If PowerPoint shows a message about macros
------------------------------------------

KPT Links Basic is made of macros, so Office checks it. What you might see, and what
to do:

- A window "Microsoft PowerPoint Security Notice" that mentions KPT_Links_Basic and
macros, with the buttons "Enable Macros" and "Disable Macros":
  click "Enable Macros".

- A red bar "SECURITY RISK Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the
source of this file is untrusted":
the file still carries the "downloaded from the internet" mark. Close PowerPoint
and run "Install KPT Links Basic" again (it removes the mark). If the bar comes
back: close PowerPoint, press Windows key + R, type %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns and
press Enter, right-click KPT_Links_Basic.ppam, choose Properties, tick "Unblock",
  click OK.

- The KPT Links Basic tab does not appear and there is no message:
in PowerPoint choose File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, next to "Manage",
choose "PowerPoint Add-ins" and click "Go...". If KPT_Links_Basic is in the list,
make sure it is ticked. If it is not in the list, set Manage to "Disabled Items" and
click "Go...": if KPT_Links_Basic is there, select it, click "Enable", then restart
PowerPoint. If it is in neither list, see "Install by hand" below.

- A work or school computer may block all macros by company rule. KPT Links Basic
cannot and will not change that; please ask your IT team.

Install by hand (without the installer)
---------------------------------------

1. Press Windows key + R, type %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns and press Enter.
2. Copy KPT_Links_Basic.ppam into that folder. Right-click the copy, choose
Properties, tick "Unblock" if you see it, and click OK.
3. Open PowerPoint, choose File > Options > Add-ins. Next to "Manage" choose
   "PowerPoint Add-ins" and click "Go...".
4. Click "Add New...", choose KPT_Links_Basic.ppam in that folder and click "Open".
If PowerPoint asks about macros, click "Enable Macros". Click "Close".

Remove
------

Close PowerPoint, then double-click "Uninstall KPT Links Basic" (the one with the gear
icon, type "Windows Command Script"). It removes the add-in file, the registry key and
the add-in's temporary folder (%TEMP%\KPT Links Basic), and nothing else. Linked
pictures stay in your decks as ordinary pictures.

Remove by hand: in PowerPoint choose File > Options > Add-ins, "Manage: PowerPoint
Add-ins", "Go...", select KPT_Links_Basic and click "Remove". Then close PowerPoint and
delete KPT_Links_Basic.ppam from %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns .
